¿What is Collaborative Online International  Learning module (COIL)?

This COIL module connects Master in Biosystems students at UAQ with CHEM 1151 students at Perimeter College to address a real‑world problem at the chemistry–biology interface from a sustainable perspective. Working in cross‑cultural teams, students will design and communicate evidence‑based proposals that link chemical principles, biosystems engineering and human–environment health. Activities include short written analyses, multimedia discussions and a final Padlet‑based presentation, supported by structured guidance and digital tools.

¿Why is important?

We currently live in a multicultural society; it is common to find ourselves in a community where we can identify several cultural groups, but do we truly recognize and understand the differences between our cultures? Do we really get involved and interact with others?

This is where we begin to talk about interculturalism and how it helps us to develop a better understanding and respect for other cultures, allowing us to learn from one another and grow together.

This is an excellent opportunity for you to experience a different perspective through cultural exchange, which enables you to gain a deeper understanding of yourself and those around you, as well as alternative learning strategies that can contribute to the construction of knowledge.

Methodology

COIL is a teaching-learning methodology that provides internationalization strategies through the use of online technologies, bringing intercultural experiences and global learning to the classroom. The COIL methodology encourages the creation of learning environments where instructors work together to generate a shared curriculum based on strong academic courses that emphasize experimental and collaborative student learning. Classes can be completed online or offered in formats combined with traditional face-to-face sessions that take place at several institutions, while international collaborative student work takes place online.
